Early Settler’s Cabin
Burris Park (220 Judd Street)
Swedish immigrant Sven Anderson built this early settler’s cabin in 1852. Some of the original logs still bear visible axe marks from when the timbers were hand‑squared.
Sven and his wife, Stava, raised their three children here, and the cabin served as their family home until 1869. Their first son, Charles, was born on May 12, 1858—just one day after Minnesota became a state. Originally, the cabin stood approximately two miles northwest of its current location. In 1998, the cabin was restored and rebuilt by the family, local volunteers, and the city, offering a tangible connection to the area’s earliest settlers.
Today, the Early Settlers Cabin houses a collection of unique historic items owned by the City of Marine on St. Croix and maintained by the Anderson Family and Stewards of Marine Mills History. Dedicated volunteers clean, catalog, and maintain the museum and welcome visitors on summer weekends. Volunteers are always needed and warmly welcomed.
