 Early Settler’s Cabin

Burris Park (220 Judd Street)

Swedish immigrant Sven Anderson built this early settler’s cabin in 1852. Some of the original logs still bear visible axe marks from when the timbers were handsquared.

Sven and his wife, Stava, raised their three children here, and the cabin served as their family home until 1869. Their first son, Charles, was born on May 12, 1858—just one day after Minnesota became a state. Originally, the cabin stood approximately two miles northwest of its current location. In 1998, the cabin was restored and rebuilt by the family, local volunteers, and the city, offering a tangible connection to the area’s earliest settlers.

Today, the Early Settlers Cabin houses a collection of unique historic items owned by the City of Marine on St. Croix and maintained by the Anderson Family and Stewards of Marine Mills History. Dedicated volunteers clean, catalog, and maintain the museum and welcome visitors on summer weekends. Volunteers are always needed and warmly welcomed.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here to sign up!

The Early Settlers Cabin is open 1-4 Saturdays and Sundays starting May 16, 2026!

Admission is free, though donations are always appreciated.

Background

The Power of the St. Croix Utility Box Mural Project was imagined by Fitzie Heimdahl and funded with a 2018 Great Idea Competition Grant from the Stillwater Area Foundation. The murals were done in partnership with the City of Marine on St. Croix, the City of Stillwater, and the Washington County Historical Society.

The theme of this project was the St. Croix River, which connects these communities. The project coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act protecting the St. Croix Riverway.

 Stone House Museum

241 5th Street

Step back in time at this beloved local history museum.

The charming Stone House Museum of Marine is itself a remarkable historic artifact. Built in 1872 by Swedish stone mason Gustav Carlson, the structure is constructed of local sandstone and stands as a testament to early craftsmanship. It is recognized by the Library of Congress as “an outstanding example of the Swedish stonework of early Minnesota settlers.” Originally serving as the Marine Town Hall and jail, the building still bears traces of its past—scribbled messages left by those once jailed there remain visible on one wall.

Today, the Stone House Museum houses a collection of unique historic items owned by the City of Marine on St. Croix. From 1963 to 2023, the Marine Women’s Civic Club cared for the collection on the city’s behalf.  In 2023, the Stewards of Marine Mills History took over from the Marine Women’s Civic Club to lovingly care for the collection. Dedicated volunteers clean, catalog, and maintain the museum and welcome visitors on summer weekends. Volunteers are always needed and warmly welcomed.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here to sign up!

The Stone House Museum is open 1-4 Saturdays and Sundays starting May 16, 2026!

Admission is free, though donations are always appreciated.
