Scam Alert: Double-Check Emails Claiming to be from City Officials

City officials are reminding residents to look closely at emails that claim to be from the Marine on St. Croix City Council or staff. Any emails received from Marine City Council or staff will end with @cityofmarine.org.

Scammers are evolving their techniques with personalized phishing emails. They can easily enter the name of a city official as a false display name and use your name in the greeting. This type of email is not the result of getting hacked – the email originates outside of the City’s email server.

What You Can Do

•          Stay alert: The City cannot stop these phishing attempts.
•          Double check that the email address matches the purported source.
•          Don’t click links, open attachments, or reply to a suspicious email.
•          If needed, verify the purported sender via an established phone number or email address.
•          Block the sender and stay on the alert for similar emails in the future.
